Dry Cleaner Cleanup and PERC Remediation

Apex offers a broad range of time proven, state-of-the art groundwater investigation and remediation technologies.

Our services are designed to define the problem and identify the best approach to cleanup, as well as restoring the soil and groundwater to acceptable levels. The Apex team has more than two decades of extensive investigation and remediation experience in dealing with petroleum hydrocarbons, solvents, heavy metals, and pesticides in soils, groundwater, and air. Apex realizes no two jobs are quite the same, and each project is treated considering all site-specific requirements.

Increasingly, the EPA and State Health Agencies are turning their attention to dry cleaner cleanup and dry cleaning chemical cleanup. Dry cleaning chemicals may impact various surface and ground waters, especially in large urban areas where long-term chemical use has impacted groundwater within local or regional aquifers.

Prominent among these dry cleaning chemicals are various glycol ethers, hydrocarbon, liquid silicone, modified hydrocarbon blends, and perchloroethylene (PERC), which is a clear, colorless liquid and is the most common chemical used in the dry cleaning industry. Improper storage, handling, mixing and disposal of these chemicals may create additional problems.

The evaluation and cleanup of solvent-impacted sites can be difficult due to the variety of dry cleaner chemical compounds which may be present. Additionally, many of these chemical compounds are heavier than water causing them to sink to the lower levels of the aquifer. Due to their complex chemical composition, these compounds are less readily biodegraded than other types of ground water contaminants.

There are a few effective means of dry cleaning chemical cleanup and PERC remediation through the means of chemical treatment, or with bioremediation. Bioremediation involves the use of micro-organisms that remove certain pollutants from an environment. For PERC bioremediation, the contaminated area would have bioremediations introduced into the contaminated area, and during the process, testing of the soil and ground water would occur to ensure that the process is working.

Often, proper management practices can substantially reduce the impact of these chemicals. These methods include application techniques that take into account watershed and rainfall runoff characteristics, and proper storage and disposal of these dry cleaner chemicals.
